Business leaders stress importance of data localisation
Top technology executives and enterprise leaders at the CIO Conference advocate for data sovereignty to accelerate local digital infrastructure and protect economic autonomy.
Enterprise leaders, technology chiefs, and legal luminaries who gathered at the 7th CIO & C-Suite Conference and Awards Africa in Lagos have underscored the strategic necessity of data localisation for Africa's economic sovereignty.
During high-impact panel sessions, business executives explored how keeping critical financial, identity, and industrial data within domestic borders safeguards countries against geopolitical vulnerabilities while spurring local technology ecosystems.
Industry contributors noted that data localisation acts as a powerful catalyst for foreign direct investment into tier-standard data centres, high-speed fibre networks, and green power solutions. By housing data domestically, African economies retain high-value technical talent and establish independent digital sovereignty.
However, participants also urged regulators to couple mandatory localisation deadlines with fiscal incentives, duty waivers on computing hardware, and energy support to ease the financial burden on emerging enterprises and commercial banks.
"Data is the crude oil of the 21st century," panellists agreed. "Developing local refining and storage capacity is vital if Africa is to capture the full economic dividend of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)."
